EU
Trade and Investment with China: Changes, Challenges and Choices |
The
spectacular rise of China is a major development of the new century. It
will bring challenges both for China and for the rest of the world. How
citizens, business and governments react to these new developments will be
key to turning global economic changes into new opportunities and benefits
for all. This is why the European Commission is committed to developing an
innovative strategy for the trade and investment relations between EU and
China in the years to come. Gathering the views of EU business and
citizens is essential for this.
The
Conference will build on a study the Commission has launched to assess the
competitiveness of various EU industrial and service sectors vis-à-vis
China in the future and the market obstacles they face.
The
objective of the conference is to gather the views of EU stakeholders, in
particular the business community, on our trade and investment priorities
to enhance EU competitiveness vis-à-vis China. Discussions will
contribute to reflections on the input to a communication
of the Commission to the Council later this year.

BEST Project on
Streamlining of Environment Related Regulatory Requirements for Companies |
In the field of environment
regulation, European companies face many different environment-related
regulatory requirements in relation to permits, monitoring, reporting and
inspection (as a result of both EU and national legislation). These
requirements are necessary for the effective operation of legislation in
place to protect the environment.
However, many such
requirements have been introduced over time and insufficient attention has
been paid to their overall coherence, their proportionality and the
accumulation of administrative burdens and costs.
Many countries are therefore
putting measures in place to streamline environment-related
requirements. These measures take a variety of forms and there is
considerable scope for learning from good/best practices which could help
promote the introduction of more effective streamlining policies in the EU.
